Skill level: intermediate to advanced.

In this polymer clay tutorial I explain how to make faux cloisonne brooches with metal leaf inlays. You will learn how to make a polymer clay brooch in any shape, how to decorate it with metal leaf, wire, and mica powders, how to attach the closure to its back, and how to give it a beautiful smooth and shiny finish with resin. Bonus material includes instructions for obtaining mica powders in custom colors and for coloring metal leaf with alcohol inks. I also included a few sketches of faux cloisonne brooches with metal leaf inlays which you are welcome to use in your work.

This tutorial includes:
  • Detailed list of materials and the best places where to buy these materials;
  • Complete list of tools needed to finish this project;
  • 19 pages of detailed step-by-step explanations with 40 big full-color pictures showing every step;
  • Additional notes and tips.

The first picture on this page shows the project described in this tutorial, and the last three pictures demonstrate possible variations of this technique. Place a mouse over the small pictures to see them enlarged.

To complete this project, you will need to cover the brooch with two-part epoxy resin.

If you need instructions for working with two-part epoxy resin, please refer to my detailed step-by-step tutorial How to use EnviroTex Lite or ICE resin.
